The Gadget Recycler with a Gorilla-Sized Heart
Long before “e-waste” was a household word, Eric Ronay was already deep in the trenches—grappling (literally and figuratively) with the millions of discarded cell phones being dumped into drawers, landfills, and lives without thought of where they end up. In 2003, he founded Eco-Cell, a recycling company built not just on environmental impact—but on purpose.
At the core of Eric’s mission lies one unexpected, urgent truth: our phones are connected to gorillas.
Cell phones and other electronics rely on minerals like tantalum, tungsten, tin, and gold—materials often mined from regions in the Democratic Republic of Congo that are also critical habitat for endangered gorillas. These minerals, sometimes called conflict minerals, fuel consumer electronics but devastate wildlife and ecosystems.
And that’s where Eric comes in—not just to recycle, but to educate, disrupt, and inspire.
Over the last 20+ years, he’s partnered with over 100 zoos and aquariums to build awareness around this connection, launching initiatives like Gorillas on the Line and creating hands-on programs that link kids, keepers, and conservation through the power of action. He focuses especially on “pre-consumers”—young people who haven’t yet bought their first phone but are ready to lead a new kind of demand: one for gorilla-safe tech.
Eric’s superpower? Vision through empathy. He can hold a shattered, outdated iPhone and see a gorilla’s forest. He can see a child holding their first phone and envision a future where they demand cleaner, kinder tech.
